Windows play a huge part in your home’s energy efficiency and comfort level. If your windows are damaged or simply outdated, they can’t do their job properly and, when that happens, it’s time to replace them. So, how do you know when it’s time for a change?
Arguably, the most obvious sign that replacement is needed is visible damage. Evaluate your windows to see if there are cracks in the glass or frame. Other visible signs can include seeing condensation between the panes, not on the surface, and noticeable fading on carpet and/or furniture near your windows. For signs that aren’t physically displayed, try to notice whether there are any drafts entering your home through the windows. Inability to dampen sound and increased electric bills with no explanation are also among the most common signs that your windows may need replacing.
Sometimes the need for replacement isn’t as easy to spot. On average, most home windows last between 15-20 years while maintaining most of their effectiveness. After this point, the seals begin to weaken, and while single-pane windows were the standard 15+ years ago, these windows lack insulation and aren’t as energy efficient as modern alternatives. Replacing your windows can have exponential effects on the overall appearance and performance of your home. Reduce your energy costs, make your home more secure, improve curb appeal, and make your family more comfortable all with one change.
Spring is the perfect time to replace your windows. For contractors, the mild temperatures and longer days allow for more time effective installation. For homeowners, installing before the extreme heat of a South Carolina summer can save a considerable amount on the year’s electric bills. Unlike the Spring conditions, colder climates can make windows more prone to condensation or cracking during or after installation.
